#SS 33090 | 2 Students | May 28 - July 18

$1200 + Airfare & Insurance

Two people are needed to reach out to young people, some of whom are indigenous, in the city of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. You will live in the Hideaway Tea House and Lodge and work with the church start named "Second Chance Group" in offering classes depending on your giftedness, such as English, music, water purification, or crafts. Through the relationships you make in the classes, you will share your faith, help to win others to faith in Christ, and help disciple them. There will be a weekly opportunity to shadow some aspect of medical work in the community and learn from the American Peoples Affinity Medical Coordinator.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Quetzaltenango (Xela) is a city with a mixed population of Indigenous (Quiche and Mam, primarily) and Spanish. It is the second largest city in the country and affords most amenities that might be wanted. It is spring-like weather during the day with cool to cold nights. Most Indigenous ladies wear distinct dress, but for this position jeans, slacks or skirts are fine for women. Jeans or pants are fine for men. No short shorts or revealing tops, please. Tattoos are acceptable, but not on the face, because here that signals gang activity.

In The Hideaway Tea house and Lodge is a shared house. You will have your own rooms, but will share a bathroom, living room, dining area, and kitchen with others who live in the house. Drinking water, hot showers, washer and dryer, internet, cable, stove, refrigerator, toaster oven and microwave are all available for renters to use. It’s more home style than hotel style. If teaching guitar, English classes or crafts, you will want to bring your guitar or any books or special materials to use. Some materials can be provided locally.

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: You must be able to live at 7,600 feet of altitude with possible trips up to 11,000 feet. Those with heart or lung problems, or those who find walking distances of up to 2 or 3 miles difficult would not be a good fit for this request. There is fair to good healthcare available in Quetzaltenango.
